-a hoist
-a window opener
-an elevator car door opener
-a drive for some type of treadle powered equipment
-rolling up an awning

re 1231--It seems more likely to me that this was intended as a paper knife/letter opener. It certainly is not the usual bookbinder's bone folder, which can be of various shapes, but never has a distinct handle. Go, for instance, to www.talasonline.com and search "folder" to see the possibilies.

I thought it might be a little too large for a letter opener, but I'm sure it could be used as one and also as a paper knife. If you check the link in the answer for 1231, there are some bone folders shown with distinct handles.
